Ducks import Hector Vrielynck had a big night with four goals as the Melbourne Ducks took game one in a 6-5 OT thriller over the Brisbane Rampage at Iceworld Boondall in a physical and fast game.
Ducks goalie Dayne Davis stopped 35 shots on the night with Rampage goalie Nick Novysedlak stopping 27 in his home opener debut.
Hector Vrielynck opened the night’s scoring with two goals to put the Ducks up 2-0 before Harley Anderson put one past Davis to make it 2-1 at the end of the first period.
Rampage then tallied two goals in the second period with Jordan Ricketts scoring his first of the season followed by Owen Sobchak scoring his third goal of the season to go up 3-2 before Hector Vrielynck evened the score at three a piece at the end of the second period.
The third period was a back and forth affair with Ducks’ Ryan Ruddle scoring his first goal of the season at 10:18 in the period to put the team up 4-3 with 10:18 on the clock.
The Rampage’s Jordan McTaggart then scored his sixth goal of the season to tie the game before teammate Owen Sobchak scored the go-ahead goal to put Brisbane up 5-4 a few minutes later.
The lead was short lived.
Hayden Dawes scored just 16 seconds later to tie the game again at 5-5 before the buzzer sounded to end regulation and send the teams to the league’s first overtime game of the season.
Overtime kicked off with 3-on-3 end to end action before a player collision in the Ducks zone lead to an outlet pass from goalie Dayne Davis to the streaking Hector Vrielynck to score his fourth of the night and take the win 6-5 in OT.
Both teams recorded points on the ladder with the Ducks taking two points and Rampage taking one to keep them sitting on top of the league standings.
An entertaining home opener for Brisbane’s capacity crowd. Both teams are back in action tonight at Iceworld Boondall with limited tickets available.
